Residential
Barndominiums
Shop below, living space beside it
A barndominium is a steel shell finished as living space, usually pairing a residential area with a working shop or equipment bay under the same roof. The structure goes up as a shell; interior framing, plumbing and finishes are conventional residential work from there.
What to think about before you order
Two things drive cost and both are decided early: where the conditioned envelope stops, and how the shop side is separated from the living side for fire, sound and dust. Local code will have opinions on both, so involve your building department before finalizing the shell dimensions.
Common uses
- Primary residence with shop
- Guest or family quarters
- Ranch headquarters
- Live-work property
Recommended profiles
These are the models that suit barndominiums best. The right one depends mostly on whether you need usable wall height or the lowest cost per square foot.
