Galvalume Steel Explained
The steel in your building is not what fails. The coating on it is — so it is worth understanding what that coating does and what you can do to leave it alone.
What it is
Galvalume is sheet steel with a metallic coating of roughly aluminum and zinc, applied at the mill. Both metals are doing a job, and they are different jobs — which is the whole point of the alloy.
The aluminum forms a stable, tightly-adhered oxide layer that is essentially inert. It is an excellent long-term barrier, but a barrier only protects what it covers.
The zinc handles the gaps. Zinc is anodic to steel, meaning that at a scratch or a cut edge it corrodes preferentially and protects the exposed steel sacrificially. That is why a scratched Galvalume panel does not immediately start rusting from the scratch outward.
Why it outlasts plain galvanizing
Traditional galvanizing is zinc alone. Zinc protects steel well, but it consumes itself doing so — it is a sacrificial coating throughout, not just at the edges. In most atmospheric conditions it wears away faster than an aluminum-zinc coating of comparable thickness.
Galvalume gets the durability of the aluminum barrier across the whole surface plus zinc's edge protection where it is actually needed. In typical service the result substantially outlasts plain galvanized steel, which is why it became the standard for building panels.
What shortens its life
Coatings fail for boring, preventable reasons. Almost all of them are about water or contact.
- Standing water. Anywhere water sits rather than sheds — a blocked gutter, a flat detail, debris in a valley — is where the coating goes first.
- Trapped debris. Leaves and dirt hold moisture against the panel indefinitely. A clean roof dries; a dirty one does not.
- Dissimilar metals. Copper and bare steel in contact with Galvalume, especially with water present, drives galvanic corrosion. Copper runoff from a pipe or vent onto a panel is a classic way to eat a hole in a roof.
- Deep scratches. Zinc protects small breaks. A long gouge through to bare steel is more than the sacrificial mechanism can cover — touch those up.
- Treated lumber contact. Some preservative treatments are corrosive to metallic coatings. Isolate panels from treated wood.
Keeping the coating intact
Maintenance is genuinely light, but it is not zero. Once or twice a year:
- Clear debris off the roof and out of the gutters.
- Check that fasteners are still tight and their washers have not degraded.
- Look for scratches through to bare steel and touch them up with a compatible coating.
- Confirm nothing is draining onto the panels that should not be — especially copper.
Do that and the coating will comfortably outlive the reason you built the building. Skip it for a decade in a wet climate with a debris-filled gutter and you will find the one spot where water sat.
