Arch vs. Straight Wall
This is the first real decision in a steel building project, and it constrains most of the ones that follow. Neither is better in the abstract — they fail in different places.
How each one works
An arch building is a continuous curve of corrugated steel bolted rib to rib. The shape is the structure — there is no separate frame holding up a separate skin. That is why it uses less steel per square foot than almost any other way of enclosing space, and why the interior is completely free of columns.
A straight-wall building separates those jobs. A frame carries the load, panels close it in, and the walls stand vertical. It costs more in material and labor because you are building two systems instead of one, and it buys you something specific in return.
The floor space question
This is where the decision is actually made. In an arch, the walls curve inward as they approach the floor. The square footage on the drawing is real, but the space near the perimeter has limited headroom. A 30' wide arch does not give you 30' of wall you can stand a cabinet against.
For storage of things that are low, or for equipment parked down the centerline, this costs you nothing. For a workshop where you wanted benches, shelving and a lumber rack around the perimeter, it costs you the whole reason you built it.
The practical test: walk your intended layout and ask what lives against the walls. If the answer is "nothing much," buy the arch and keep the money. If the answer is a bench wall, racking or tall storage, the straight wall pays for itself immediately.
Cost
Arches are meaningfully cheaper per square foot at comparable spans, and the gap is widest at small and medium sizes. They are also faster to assemble, because there are fewer distinct components and no separate framing stage — which matters if you are raising it yourself.
At very large spans the comparison narrows, and above a certain size wide-span structural profiles become the sensible answer regardless, because they handle the loads and the door requirements that big buildings bring.
Doors and openings
Straight walls take doors and windows in conventional positions, including along the sidewall, because there is a full-height vertical plane to put them in. This matters more than it sounds: multiple overhead doors along one side is straightforward in a straight-wall building and awkward in an arch.
In an arch, openings are simplest in the endwalls. A sidewall opening means framing into the curve itself, which is possible but constrains size and placement. If your layout depends on side access, that is a strong signal.
How to choose
- Choose an arch when cost per square foot is the priority, the contents are low or centered, and endwall access is fine.
- Choose a straight wall when you need usable wall height, sidewall doors, or the building will be finished as occupied space.
- Consider the hybrid — straight sidewalls with an arched roof — when you want most of the arch's structural efficiency and still need real wall height. It is the most common recommendation for people torn between the two.
If you are still unsure, describe what goes inside and where it sits. That usually settles it faster than comparing specifications.
